The latest Year 3 Learning Update!

This week in Maths we have been learning how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. We have used a range of strategies and identified complementary fractions. We have been using these skills to solve problems about conservation in the rainforest.

In English, we finished our biography topic. We read a range of biographies connected to our rainforest and South America topic – we learned about David Attenborough, Frida Kahlo and Greta Thunberg. We researched and wrote our own biographies about Greta Thunberg. Next we will be reading a range of Just So stories.

In topic we explored where the main tropical rainforests are in the world. We introduced the concept of the equator and the tropics of capricorn and cancer. We will be focusing our learning on the Amazon rainforest.

In science, we started our plant topic and looked at naming different parts of plants.

We were lucky enough to have Chef Alice from the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts run a workshop for us – we explored the 5 main flavours – bitter, sour, salt, sweet and umami. We tried a range of exciting foods like chicory and samphire. We also explored the connections between food and our senses – how does our food speak to us (an egg frying!) what does the colour of a food tell you about the flavour (guess the flavours of the jellies in the photo!) and ask your child what colour food does not occur naturally! Chef Alice will be back next month to run a new workshop about knife skills.

3G are continuing to swim – please volunteer to help us if you can. 3W will be doing PE on Thursdays and will need their PE kits.

The latest Year 4 Learning Update!

Another great few weeks in year 4, coming back to school with a bang and straight on a trip the following week! Thank you so much to all our adults helpers, the day was great (if a bit chaotic!).

In English, the children have begun a 3 week unit learning about dystopian fiction! They have read the story ‘The Promise’ and learnt about a world that is mean, hard and ugly, and the people are mean, hard and ugly too. However, the thief in the story changes the world into a Utopian word. They acted out the story, sequenced it and then re-told it. This week, they’ve been exploring some dystopian fiction stories they’ve already read and illustrating a dystopian and utopian world.

In maths, the children have been learning all about tenths and hundredths. They’ve written them in fractions and decimals, as well as organising them on a place value chart. They’ve solved reasoning problems and even begun to convert between tenths and hundredths.

We started our new topic this term! Save Our World has started brilliantly will all the children being really engaged and excited for their new learning. We created some topic title pages using water colours to show a negative world, where global warming is killing our planet, and a positive world where we’re reversing the effects of global warming!

Thank you so much to the parents who came swimming this week with 4W, we cant do these things without you and we appreciate it so much!

Don’t forget, we’re going to Clapham Common next week (Thursday 2nd May) and we always need parental support!
